The context
The reality of today's volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world affects businesses, governments, and nonprofit organizations alike. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) face a double challenge as they operate in a shrinking space for civil society. NGOs often represent minority and controversial interests, vulnerable groups and principles such as human rights, resulting in adversarial relationships with majority groups, businesses, governments and state institutions, political formations, and other NGOs. While this type of issue definition and representation is an essential aspect of civil society's role in a healthy democracy, it also poses security risks and challenges.
The problem
There is a pont when a hostile environment diminishes civil society activists’ mission implementation ability. Operationally it means threats of or actual violence against property and staff/affiliates, loss or theft of sensitive data, reputation attacks, legal harassment – to name just a few sources of risks. These threats induce stress in staff, make it difficult to engage volunteers, retain/hire personnel, complicate fundraising efforts, and disturb logistical operations.
Nonprofits are vulnerable to a variety of threats as transparent organizations, with information on addresses, members, programs, events, finances, supporters, in the public realm. Additionally, those working in the NGO sector are typically strong on civic courage and social risk-taking, but often lack sensitivity towards systemic security awareness and risk management. Moreover, diverting resources from mission implementation to risk management may be perceived as self-serving and against the moral principle of serving others with all that we have.
